Offrir \u00e0 la divinit\u00e9 un animal en terre cuite ou en bronze: une pratique bien connue dans l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 grecque.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dans la religion grecque antique, les fid\u00e8les offrent \u00e0 la divinit\u00e9 des objets divers, souvent en lien avec leur personnalit\u00e9 ou leur domaine de pr\u00e9dilection. Ainsi offre-t-on des repr\u00e9sentations de tortue \u00e0 Apollon et \u00e0 Herm\u00e8s, car ce dernier en tua une peu apr\u00e8s sa naissance tandis qu\u2019Apollon en transforma une en lyre. Le mouton est aussi particuli\u00e8rement associ\u00e9 \u00e0 Herm\u00e8s car c\u2019est le dieu des troupeaux.<\/p>\n

Dans la religion grecque, deux cas de figure sont possibles : soit l\u2019ex-voto comm\u00e9more une offrande en nature soit il se substitue \u00e0 un sacrifice.<\/p>\n

Dans le premier cas, l\u2019objet offert est charg\u00e9 de dire pour l\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9 au dieu qu\u2019on lui a fait un vrai sacrifice, par exemple celui d\u2019un b\u00e9lier. L\u2019offrande en nature est donc comm\u00e9mor\u00e9e par un ex-voto en bronze, pierre ou terre cuite, comme l\u2019attestent les inventaires de temples et sanctuaires u monde grec, o\u00f9 plusieurs petits bronzes et terres cuites ont \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Dans le cas d’une substitution symbolique, le d\u00e9dicant, qui n\u2019est pas assez riche pour sacrifier un animal de son cheptel ou qui \u00e9prouve de la sollicitude envers ses b\u00eates, choisit de leur laisser la vie sauve. L\u2019animal n\u2019est donc pas sacrifi\u00e9, mais remplac\u00e9 par un substitut \u2013 parfois un g\u00e2teau zoomorphe, ou une statuette.<\/p>\n

Ces ex-votos peuvent aussi repr\u00e9senter l\u2019animal sur lequel le d\u00e9dicant demande la protection de la divinit\u00e9\u00a0: l\u2019animal donn\u00e9 en image au dieu est celui sur lequel le fid\u00e8le appelle la protection divine et non un animal destin\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre sacrifi\u00e9. Cette offrande s\u2019accompagne alors d\u2019une pri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n
